PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear SF Chapter ASSP Members,

Our October "Behind the Scenes" Tour at the de Young Museum was a success! We had over 25 members attend the tour and 12 members stay afterwards to enjoy appetizers and drinks at a local pub. A big thank you to Al Barna, Occupational Health & Safety officer, for making the tour happened. You can see some photos from the tour our our website, here.

Our next event is coming up on November 13th at Cal Services Tool in Hayward, CA. Kahlilah Guyah will be joining us to speak about ISO 45001 Implementation. In order to keep cost down to the members, we are now hosting our technical meetings at locations where our members have generously donated for free. Thank you to Cal Services Tool for opening up their venue to host our November Technical Meeting!

I am excited to announce that we will be hosting our first ever SF-Chapter WISE Open House/Networking Event on Thursday, November 14th at Foundry & Lux in South San Francisco. This event is FREE! I hope you can join us to learn more about WISE (Women in Safety Excellence) and network with other safety professionals in the Bay Area.

We are in need of more speaker submissions for the 2020 Bay Area Safety Symposium to fill our Construction and Ergonomics tracks. You will find more information below on how to sumit a proposal. Please reach out to your network and encourage them to submit a proposal if you think they are a good fit!

I really encourage all of you to bring anyone who has an interest in Environmental Health & Safety to a SF chapter meeting, Construction, or Grapevine section meeting, to see the benefits of membership first-hand and the quality and value the chapter volunteers strive to provide.  Our membership has been growing and we are currently at 584 members. It would be great if we could hit the 600 month. If you know anybody that would benefit from being a member, I encourage you to bring them to a meeting to see the value of ASSP membership.

Lastly, my prayers go out to everyone that has been affected by the fires that have been ravaging Northern California. For local Northern California residents, I have put information below on how we can help either through monetary or supplies donation..

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Sincerely,

REGULATORY UPDATES
Cal/OSHA Reminds Employers to Protect Workers if the Air Quality is Unhealthy due to Wildfire Smoke
Release Number: 2019-81 Date: October 27, 2019

Oakland—Cal/OSHA is advising employers that steps must be taken to protect workers from harmful exposure if the air quality is unhealthy due to wildfire smoke.
California’s protection from wildfire smoke standard applies to workplaces where the Air Quality Index (AQI) for fine particles in the air is 151 or greater and where workers may be exposed to wildfire smoke. When wildfire smoke affects a worksite, employers must monitor the AQI for particulate matter in the air, known as PM2.5. Employers can monitor the AQI using the following websites:
U.S. EPA AirNow website
U.S. Forest Service Wildland Air Quality Response Program website
California Air Resources Board website
Local air pollution control district websites or local air quality management district website.
If the AQI for PM2.5 is 151 or greater, employers must take the following steps to protect employees:
• Communication – Inform employees of the AQI for PM2.5 and the protective measures available to them. • Training – Train all employees on the information contained in section 5141.1 Appendix B.
• Modifications – Implement modifications to the workplace, if feasible, to reduce exposure. Examples include providing enclosed structures or vehicles for employees to work in, where the air is filtered.
• Changes – Implement practicable changes to work procedures or schedules. Examples include changing the location where employees work or reducing the amount of time they work outdoors or exposed to unfiltered outdoor air.
• Respiratory protection – Provide proper respiratory protection equipment, such as disposable respirators, for voluntary use.
•To filter out fine particles, respirators must be labeled N-95, N-99, N-100, R-95, P-95, P-99, or P-100, and must be labeled as approved by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
If the AQI for PM2.5 exceeds 500, respirator use is required. Employers must ensure employees uses respirators and implement a respiratory protection program as required in California’s respiratory standard.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

We are always looking to network and find out if there are job openings. The jobs must be in an Environment, Health and Safety function. For example: Fleet Safety Manager, Director of Environmental, Health and Safety, Risk Manager, Health and Safety Specialist etc.

We will post the jobs to our website. This is done currently at no charge, but the chapter is always accepting donations to help establish our scholarship fund. Your contribution is appreciated.

Please email the job information to the Communication/Website Coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, at updates@sanfrancisco.assp.org .
