PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear SF Chapter ASSP Members,

Happy New Year to everyone! The chapter has had a busy start to the new year, hosting four events this month alone. We kicked off 2020 at TransBay Cable substation, where we heard Lori Elders talk to us about High Voltage Electrical Safety followed by a tour. Our SF-WISE section also hosted their first panel discussion this month, with over 40 #WISEgals & #WISEguys attending the event. To see photos from or events check out our website: sanfranciscoassp.org.

I encourage all of you to start off the new year right with attending our technical meetings and networking events! Our events provide a great opportunity to keep updated on the latest trends and topics in our industry and to also help grow your professional network.I hope that in hosting a variety of events through the SF Chapter and our sections (Grapevine, Construction & WISE), you can find something to attend that peaks your interest.

In February our chapter will be holding two events. The SF Chapter will be hosting a networking tour at the Tesla Factory in Fremont on Wednesday, February 12th from 4-6pm. Registration is open and limited, so please sign up early to secure a spot. This is an event you will not want to miss!

Our Construction Section will also be holding a meeting on February 18th at Scott's Seafood in Oakland. Former NFL linebacker Anthony Trucks will be discussing the psychology and strategy of lowering and/or eliminating soft tissue injuries and lost time in the workplace. The Construction Section meets every 3rd Tuesday on even numbered months.

We also have nominations open for the 2020 San Francisco Chapter SPY award. I encourage all of you to nominate colleagues and others in your professional network for this prestigious award. The winner will be announced at the 2020 Bay Area Safety Symposium on March 4, 2020. Find out how you can nominate somebody below. The due date for submissions has been extended to February 14th

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATES

Driver Fatigue on the Job – Motor Vehicle Safety at Work
NIOSH has studied work-related accidents involving motor vehicles where driver fatigue may have been a causative factor and published several studies that resulted in data and Fact Sheets on driver fatigue. NIOSH recommends a fatigue risk management system will help employers and workers work together to reduce the risks of driver fatigue. The link to NIOSH is provided here: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/motorvehicle/topics/driverfatigue/default.html
Findings related to the data”

  • One in five fatal crashes in the general population involve driver fatigue.
  • A survey found that 37% of workers got less than the recommended min. of 7-hrs of sleep.
  • After 17 consecutive hours awake, impairment is equivalent to having a blood alcohol content
  • (BAC) of 0.05. After 24 hours awake, impairment is equivalent to a BAC of 0.10.
Electronic Cigarettes
With more information now available about potential hazards posed by e-cigarettes, the continued growth of the e-cig industry, however, is unprecedented; and young people (middle and high school students) are picking up the habit every day. A report from CDC published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report noted that, since 2017, the use of e-cigarettes by high school students had jumped 78%; usage by middle school students increased by 48%. So how should we, as safety and health professionals, address the occupational and public health concerns associated with e-cigarettes? In 2014, AIHA’s Indoor Environmental Quality and Risk Committees prepared a white paper on potential hazards associated with electronic cigarettes. Since the original white paper was published, a significant amount of scientific research has been performed, identifying additional hazards from flavorings and potential health effects not previously described. The updated white paper can be found: https://synergist.aiha.org/201905-electronic-cigarettes-ih.

NIOSH Contributes Hearing Loss Prevention Research
NIOSH provided major contributions in a recently-published issue of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA) on noise-induced hearing loss. The research explores the use of animal data in studying human hearing loss prevention, and the different populations that are affected by hearing loss issues: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/updates/upd-12-09- 19.html. The NIOSH-authored contributions to the JASA provide:
  •  An introduction and summary of noise-induced hearing loss and the application of animal models, and animal data, to human hearing-loss and prevention in various environments.
  • Noise surveys related to firearm noise exposures in the military, looking at both indoor and outdoor firing ranges.
  • A study of middle-ear muscle contractions and clinically-measured acoustic reflexes to brief sounds.
  • A review of occupational noise exposure: its effects, epidemiology, and impact with recommendations for reducing injury

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

We are always looking to network and find out if there are job openings. The jobs must be in an Environment, Health and Safety function. For example: Fleet Safety Manager, Director of Environmental, Health and Safety, Risk Manager, Health and Safety Specialist etc.

We will post the jobs to our website. This is done currently at no charge, but the chapter is always accepting donations to help establish our scholarship fund. Your contribution is appreciated.

Please email the job information to the Communication/Website Coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, at updates@sanfrancisco.assp.org .
