PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear San Francisco Chapter Members,

Life and business are not normal for any of us right now. I know many of you must be feeling worried for your loved ones, your colleagues and your communities. I know I am.

I’m sure many of you have seen the news that public health officials issued shelter-in-place orders for a number of counties in Northern California in an effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus and not overwhelm hospitals. As we saw with a number of U.S. states and other countries around the world recently, public health and government officials are calling for more aggressive infection prevention measures. I know we are all certainly supportive of social distancing to protect people and communities as many of you are managing your businesses working remotely or are trying to work with your employers to continue critical operations in the community.

We will get through this, and we’ll do it together. As safety professionals, thank you for your effort, your optimism and your commitment as we continue to navigate this dynamic, unprecedented situation.

ASSP society has joined the effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and has recommended that chapters postpone or cancel meetings and other events through the end of April 2020. As a result, we will be postponing our in-person meetings and events and will be shifting to virtual meetings moving forward. The chapter will be holding the April technical meeting virtually. More information will be sent via email shortly.

On a lighter note, we were lucky enough to be able to host our annual Bay Area Safety Sympsium on March 4th this month at the San Ramon Marriott. We had a fabulous turnout, with over 400 safety professionals and 45 sponsors & exhibitors. You can now access the slide presentations from our speakers at the symposium website. We also have photos from the symposium up on the SF Chapter website that you can view. Save the date! The 2021 Bay Area Safety Symposium will be held on March 10, 2021.

We will also be sending out another email with our slate of candidates for the 2020-2021 chapter year shortly, followed by an electronic ballot sent by ASSP society to vote in April. Officers elected will be announced in mid-May.

Thank you again for your continued support and investment in ASSP. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any feedback on how I can make your membership experience more valuable at the Chapter level.

Respectfully,

Amanda Shin

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE

OSHA Launches New Webpage to Observe 50th Anniversary of
the OSH Act
, https://www.osha.gov/osha50/
Fed-OSHA has launched a new webpage marking the 50th anniversary of the
Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, the landmark worker safety and
health law that led to the creation of OSHA. The webpage highlights transformative workplace improvements over the past half-century, from OSHA’s first standards and whistleblower protections, to assistance programs for small businesses, and the creation of training centers and education grants to help everyone understand and comply with the law.

OSHA Revises NEP to Reduce or Eliminate Worker Exposure to
Silica,
https://www.osha.gov/news/newsreleases/trade/02012008
Fed-OSHA has established a revised National Emphasis Program (NEP) to identify and reduce or eliminate worker exposures to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) in construction, general industry, and maritime. The NEP will target specific industries expected to have the highest numbers of workers exposed to airborne silica, and focus on enforcement of the new silica standards. The standards became effective in June 2016, with construction required to comply on September 23, 2017, and general industry and maritime employers required to comply on June 23, 2018. What changes were made to the NEP?

CAL/OSHA Guidance on Requirements to Protect Workers from Coronavirus
https://www.dir.ca.gov/dosh/coronavirus/Health-Care-General-Industry.html
Workplace safety and health regulations in California require employers to protect workers exposed to airborne infectious diseases such as the coronavirus. Cal/OSHA has posted guidance to help employers comply with these safety requirements and to provide workers information on how to protect themselves.

CDC – Coronavirus Information
CDC is closely monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first detected in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China and continues to spread in China. COVID-19 illnesses are being reported in a growing number of international locations. This is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation and CDC will provide updated information as it becomes available here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html. NIOSH recently released a webpage to highlight resources available for the protection of workers: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/emres/2019_ncov.html. This page provides a centralized resource for new guidance and recommendations produced during CDC’s COVID-19 response, as well as pre-existing resources and materials, to promote the safety and health of workers.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

We are always looking to network and find out if there are job openings. The jobs must be in an Environment, Health and Safety function. For example: Fleet Safety Manager, Director of Environmental, Health and Safety, Risk Manager, Health and Safety Specialist etc.

We will post the jobs to our website. This is done currently at no charge, but the chapter is always accepting donations to help establish our scholarship fund. Your contribution is appreciated.

Please email the job information to the Communication/Website Coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, at updates@sanfrancisco.assp.org .
