Cal/OSHA has been working on a workplace violence prevention regulation for several years. On July 1st of this year SB 553 finally went into effect. It requires California employers to develop and implement a workplace violence prevention plan in accordance with Labor Code Section 6401.9. In this program we will address what employers should be doing to identify and address hazards associated with workplace violence in the workplace and how employers’ action to address workplace violence prevention must be considered in light of employee rights and other obligations associated with the employer – employee relationship. We will also cover what to do with that information and provide resource information on how to build and implement a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan.

Our Speakers

Lisa Prince has represented employers in OSHA and Cal/OSHA matters for more than twenty years. Lisa was a partner at Walter & Prince LLP before starting her own firm in 2020. The Prince Firm represents employers ranging from Fortune 500 companies with thousands of employees in many states to local small hometown businesses. The firm focuses on all aspects of the California Safety and Health Administration [Cal/OSHA] including advocacy during rule-making, compliance assistance, management of enforcement activity and appeal of citations. In addition to defense work, the firm helps employers, safety directors, risk managers, and human resource administrators to proactively reduce risk and develop preventative safety programs that comply with regulatory mandates.

Lisa is a sought-after speaker on a broad spectrum of workplace safety topics and regulatory updates, as well as Cal/OSHA investigations and the Cal/OSHA appeals process. She presents an annual update on the law for several safety groups and is regularly a judge in the Associated General Contractors’ (AGC) annual Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) program. Lisa lives with her wonderful husband and partner in all things. They are now empty nesters as their amazing daughter has gone off to college in southern California. That leaves Mila the magnificent, the “Canine-American Hybrid” (mutt) in charge. In her spare time, Lisa continues to strive for a perfect garden and perfect manicure . . . both are still proving elusive.

Andrew Lemen is the Risk-Safety Unit Manager in the Human Resources Risk Management Office for Sonoma County. The Risk-Safety Unit provides support and resources to thirty county departments in the implementation and oversight of county occupational, health and, safety programs (OSH), as well as workplace violence prevention. Andrew’s primary role is leading a team of analysts to support the day-to-day operations conducted by department safety coordinators, and manage specialty vendor contracts providing OSH, Industrial Hygiene, and Workplace Violence Prevention Services. Prior to his experience with the county, Andrew has worked to provide EH&S support in the largescale winemaking, and intermodal shipping industries.
